Gerald’s Game (2017) Summary

Gerald’s Game is a psychological horror film directed by Mike Flanagan and starring Carla Gugino and Bruce Greenwood.

Plot Summary

The story follows Jessie Burlingame (Carla Gugino) and her husband, Gerald (Bruce Greenwood), who travel to their remote lake house in a desperate attempt to reignite their struggling marriage.

Gerald, a successful lawyer, suggests an intense sex game involving handcuffing Jessie to the bedposts. When Jessie quickly becomes uncomfortable and asks him to stop, a heated argument ensues. In the midst of the confrontation, Gerald suffers a fatal heart attack and collapses to the floor, leaving Jessie trapped and handcuffed to the bed with no one nearby to hear her cries for help.

As a stray, hungry dog wanders into the house, Jessie’s physical predicament quickly becomes a psychological nightmare. With no way to escape, severe dehydration, and the horrifying sight of her husband’s corpse, Jessie begins to hallucinate. She is confronted by vivid spectral versions of Gerald and a more self-assured version of herself, known as “Goody,” who engage in a brutal verbal debate about her life and marriage.

These intense hallucinations and the desperate fight for survival trigger long-repressed memories of a traumatic childhood experience involving her father. Jessie realizes that her survival hinges not just on escaping the metal cuffs, but on confronting the shame and fear that have held her captive her entire life. Her ultimate escape attempt is one of the most agonizing and gruesome moments in the film.
