The story begins in 1814 with the return of James Keziah Delaney (played by Tom Hardy), an adventurer and businessman who has been presumed dead for twelve years after traveling to Africa. He returns to London for the funeral of his estranged father, Horace Delaney, and to inherit what little the old man has left him.

His most valuable inheritance is a small, strategically vital piece of land on the Pacific Northwest coast of North America called Nootka Sound. Driven by a mix of vengeance, a desire to rebuild his father’s shipping empire, and a need to expose the sinister secrets of the East India Company (including its ties to the slave trade), James Delaney finds himself encircled by formidable enemies. With an enigmatic, almost supernatural aura stemming from his years in Africa, Delaney wages a brutal, solitary war against some of the most powerful institutions in Britain.
