The series centers on Joyce “Tilly” Mitchell, a married, middle-aged prison tailor shop supervisor. Feeling trapped and unfulfilled in her life, Tilly becomes romantically and emotionally entangled with two convicted murderers working under her supervision: Richard Matt, a charismatic and manipulative inmate, and David Sweat, a younger, quieter inmate.
Tilly’s complex relationships with the men go beyond mere supervision, and she eventually agrees to aid them in their meticulously planned escape. The show meticulously chronicles the months-long process of the two inmates cutting through walls and pipes to break out of the maximum-security facility, the chaotic manhunt that followed, and the subsequent investigation into Tilly’s role in the audacious crime. The series explores themes of desperation, manipulation, and the stark reality of life in a confined, isolated environment.
The entire seven-episode series was directed by Ben Stiller.
