Black Snake Moan Movie Summary

The story revolves around two deeply troubled souls: Lazarus Redd (Samuel L. Jackson), a deeply religious, recently estranged farmer and former blues musician whose wife has left him for his brother, and Rae Doole (Christina Ricci), a young woman from an abusive past whose anxiety manifests as a severe addiction to sex (nymphomania). When Rae’s boyfriend, Ronnie (Justin Timberlake), ships out for military service, her condition worsens.
One morning, Lazarus finds Rae severely beaten and left for dead on the side of a road. He takes her back to his isolated farmhouse and, upon learning of her reputation and condition, vows to save her soul from what he views as “wickedness.” To keep her from running off and engaging in self-destructive behavior, he controversially chains her to a radiator in his home.
What follows is a complex, raw, and highly dramatic relationship where the two characters confront their own demons—Lazarus’s rage and loneliness, and Rae’s trauma and addiction—through faith, home-cooked meals, and, most powerfully, the healing power of the Mississippi blues.
