The 8th Pay Commission is anticipated to propose a significant increase in the minimum basic pay for central government employees.

The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the establishment of the 8th Central Pay Commission to review and recommend revisions to the salary structure of central government employees and pensioners.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the commission’s recommendations are expected to be implemented from January 1, 2026, following the conclusion of the 7th Pay Commission’s term.
The 8th Pay Commission is anticipated to propose a significant increase in the minimum basic pay for central government employees, with reports suggesting a potential hike of up to 186%, raising the minimum basic pay to ₹51,480 per month.
The commission’s recommendations are also expected to include adjustments to allowances, pensions, and other benefits, aiming to enhance the overall compensation package for government employees.
The government has stated that the Chairman and two members of the 8th Pay Commission will be appointed soon, and further details regarding its composition and specific recommendations will be announced in due course.
