Dr V Narayanan holds a Master’s degree in Cryogenic Engineering and a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from the IIT Kharagpur.

Dr V Narayanan, a distinguished Indian aerospace engineer and rocket propulsion expert, has been appointed as the new Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). He will officially assume the role on January 14, 2025, succeeding S. Somanath, who has led the organization since 2022.

Who is Dr V Narayanan?
Born in 1964 in Nagercoil, Tamil Nadu, Dr. Narayanan holds a Master’s degree in Cryogenic Engineering and a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur.
He began his career with ISRO in 1984, contributing significantly to India’s advancements in rocket propulsion technology.
Throughout his tenure, Dr. Narayanan has been instrumental in the development of key propulsion systems for various launch vehicles, including the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) and the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV).
As the Director of the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC) since 2018, he oversaw the development of liquid, semi-cryogenic, and cryogenic propulsion stages, playing a pivotal role in missions such as Chandrayaan-2 and GSLV Mk III.

Under his leadership, ISRO aims to achieve ambitious milestones, including building an Indian space station by 2035 and conducting a manned moon mission by 2040.
Additionally, the organization seeks to expand India’s share in the global commercial space market from $8 billion to $44 billion over the next decade, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of establishing India as a leading space superpower.
Dr V Narayanan‘s appointment comes at a crucial juncture as ISRO continues to advance its space exploration endeavors and satellite technology initiatives. His extensive experience and leadership are expected to drive the organization’s future successes in the rapidly evolving space sector.
