International Labour Day 2024:- History

The Second International, an organisation of socialist and labour parties, declared May 1 as the International Labour day in 1889. This day commemorates the Haymarket riot in Chicago in 1886.

Workers protested against the severe labour laws, violations of workers’ rights, poor working conditions and long working hours. They demanded eight-hour workday instead of sixteen-hour. As a result, confrontation took place between the police and the workers. Four workers died during this confrontation. In 1916, the US recognise the eight-hour workdays.

In India, the first International Labour day was celebrated in 1923 by the Labour Kisan Party of Hindustan led by Comrade Singaravelar. It was observed in Madras (now Chennai). In India, Labour Day is also known as ‘Kamgar Din’, ‘Antarrashtriya Shramik Diwas’, ‘Kamgar Diwas’ in Marathi and ‘Uzhaopalar Naal’ in Tamil.
