In North India, this day marks the beginning of Chaitra Navratri. In Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, Gudi Padwa is celebrated as Ugadi. Gudi Padwa is also known as Samvatsar Padvo. It marks the beginning of spring season and rabi crops are reaped on this day.

Gudi Padwa comprises of two words — ‘Gudi’ and ‘Padwa’. Gudi means flag or symbol of Lord Brahma and Padwa stands for the first phase of the moon. This year, Gudi Padwa falls on March 22, 2023 (Wednesday).

According to the Hindu mythology, Lord Brahma had created the Universe on Gudi Padwa. It is also believed that on this day Brahma introduced days, weeks, months and years. Many Hindus believe that this day marks the coronation of Lord Rama when he returned to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana.

People wake up early in the morning on this day, clean their houses, take a bath and decorate their homes especially the main gate. People wear new and attractive clothes. On this day, a flag or bamboo can be seen on the roofs of houses in Maharashtra. People also visit Shiva temples near their houses. Special delicacies such as pooran poli and shrikhand are also prepared on this day.
