Shab-e-Barat is an important day of the Muslim community which is celebrated between the 14th and 15th night of the month of Sha’aban, the eighth month of the Islamic calendar. This year, Shab-e-Barat will begin on the evening of March 7 and will end on the evening of March 8.
The meaning of Shab-e-Barat is ‘The Night of Forgiveness and Fortune’. Muslims visit Mosques at night and offer prayers to Allah. They read the Holy Quran and atone for their sins by observing fast. Muslims believe that on this day Allah writes the destinies of all human beings for the coming year by taking into account the deeds they committed in past.
Shab-e-Barat is also known as Mid Sha’ban, Barat Night, Cheragh e Brat, Bara’s Night, Laylat-ul-Barat, Berat Kandili and Nisfu Syaaban. It is mostly celebrated in countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, India and Turkey. They celebrate this day with much fervour. Some muslims also do charity on this day and give food to the poor.
