Narasimha Jayanti is one of the most auspicious festivals of hindus. It is celebrated on the Chaturdashi tithi of Shukla paksha in the month of Vaishakh. This year, it falls on May 14, 2022 (saturday).
Narasimha was the fourth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Narasimha word is comprised of two Sanskrit words ‘Nara’ and ‘Simha’. Nara means man and Simha means lion. Lord Vishnu took the avatar of half man and half lion in the form of Narasimha.

The demon king Hiranyakashipu had a boon that neither man nor any animal could kill him, he could neither die in the day nor at night, neither in the house nor outside, neither on earth nor in the sky. That’s why he considered himself as God and asked everyone to worship him but his own son Prahalad refused to worship him. Prahalad was an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu so he continued to worship him.
In anger, demon Hiranyakashipu tried to kill Prahalad several times but every time Lord Vishnu saved him. Then, Lord Vishnu thought to end the evil by killing Hiranyakashipu. For this purpose, he took the avatar of Narasimha (half man and half lion) during sunset and killed the Hiranyakashipu. So, Narasimha jayanti also marks the win of good over evil.

People perform the puja of Lord Narasimha on this day. According to Hindu scriptures, there are more than 74 forms of Narasimha and nine of them are consider as major forms which is known as Nav Narasimha. Andhra Pradesh is the only place in India where all the nine forms of Narasimha are worshipped in Narasimha Swami temple.

On the auspicious occasion of Narasimha Jayanti, people wake up early in the morning. After taking a bath, they wear clean clothes. They observe fast from the sunrise to the next day’s sunrise. During this period, they can have only one meal which must exclude grains and cereals. It is believed that by observing fast on this day, people can get rid of all problems and sins.
