Odia Musician and singer Prafulla Kar has passed away at the age of 83. He had received the Padma Shri award in 2015. PM Modi said that he will be remembered for his pioneering contribution to Odia culture and music.
The legendary odia musician, singer, lyricist, writer and columnist Prafulla Kar has died on sunday night at his Bhubaneswar residence. He was 83.
He complained of chest pain after having his dinner on sunday night and died soon after at his Satya Nagar house. His family was with him when he breathed his last. His funeral will be performed at Swarga Dwara crematorium in Puri on monday with full state honours.

Prime minister Narendra Modi, Odisha Governor Ganeshi Lal, Odisha Chief minister Naveen Patnaik, Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan and other dignitaries condoled Prafulla Kar’s death.
“Anguished by the passing away of Shri Prafulla Kar Ji. He will be remembered for his pioneering contribution to Odia culture and music. He was blessed with a multifaceted personality and his creativity was reflected in his works. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti,” PM Modi tweeted.
“I am saddened to learn of the death of the famous musician Prafulla Kar. His demise marked the end of an era in the world of Oriya music. His unique musical style will forever immortalize him in the hearts of the people. I extend my deepest condolences to the bereaved family and wish them well,” Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik tweeted.
Prafulla Kar was born on february 16, 1939 into musician family in Puri, Odisha. He started singing from his college days and made debut as a professional singer in the odia film industry in 1962 with ‘Shri Shri Patita Pabana.’
He sung many songs including Namaste Prabhu Jagannatha, Jaya Jaya Jagannatha, Kamala Desha Rajakumara and Mahabahu. He has worked as music director and as singer in 70 oriya films as well as in 4 bangla films.
Prafulla Kar had recieved Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian honour of India in 2015 for his contribution in the field of arts. He won Jayadeva award in 2004 and also won state film award eight times.
He is survived by wife Manorama, sons Mahadip and Mahaprasad and daughter Sandhyadeepa.
