World Heritage day, also known as the International day for monuments and sites, is celebrated on April 18 every year. This was first celebrated in 1983 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). Since then, it has been celebrated every year.
This day is celebrated to raise awareness about the cultural heritage and diversity.
World Heritage Day 2022:- Theme
The International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) decides a particular theme every year. The theme for World Heritage Day 2022 is “Heritage and Climate.” ICOMOS official website wrote, “We call on you to explore the theme: Heritage and Climate through open, constructive and intergenerational dialogues.”
The theme for World Heritage Day 2021 was “Complex Pasts: Diverse Futures.”

In 1982, the ICOMOS proposed to celebrate April 18 as World Heritage Day. In 1983, the General Assembly of UNESCO approved World Heritage Day during its 22nd General Conference.
World Heritage Day 2022:- Significance
The day promotes awareness about the cultural heritage and sites and the efforts required for their conservation and protection. The main purpose of this day is to unite people of different cultural heritage so that they can know each other’s heritage.
India has a total of 3691 monuments and sites. Among those, 40 are designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including Taj Mahal, Hampi, Ellora Caves, Sun temple, Rani ki Vav, Ajanta Caves, Red Fort.
