God’s Pocket Movie Summary
The film is set in the 1970s in the fictional, gritty, blue-collar South Philadelphia neighborhood known as “God’s Pocket.”

The plot kicks off when the highly disliked, unstable stepson of local small-time criminal Mickey Scarpato (Philip Seymour Hoffman), named Leon, is killed in a construction “accident.” Leon’s death is quickly ruled an accident by the police, but everyone in the neighborhood knows better, and Leon’s distraught mother, Jeanie Scarpato (Christina Hendricks), insists Mickey find the real killer.
Mickey, a man struggling with gambling debts and a strained marriage, is already in over his head. His attempts to arrange a funeral and bury the body are complicated by a hostile funeral director, stolen meat, and a crippling lack of funds. Things escalate when an alcoholic, cynical local newspaper columnist, Richard Shelburn (Richard Jenkins), starts sniffing around the case, drawn to Jeanie’s beauty and her tragic story, only to stir up further trouble in the insulated community.
The movie follows Mickey’s increasingly desperate, darkly comical efforts to navigate the escalating chaos—a body he can’t bury, a wife he can’t please, and a truth no one wants to hear. It is notably one of the final starring roles for Philip Seymour Hoffman.
