Movie Summary

Her world changes when she meets Harlan (Edward Norton), a charismatic, mysterious drifter who dresses like an old-fashioned cowboy and genuinely believes he is one, a man out of time. Tobe is instantly drawn to his romantic, carefree spirit, and they quickly begin an intense, passionate, and furtive romance, despite the disapproval of her father.
As the relationship progresses, however, Harlan’s charm gives way to a deeply unsettling and potentially dangerous delusion, and Tobe is forced to confront the difference between the romantic myth he projects and the unstable reality of the man. The film explores the clash between the ideals of the romantic Old West and the harsh realities of the contemporary world.

Review
Down in the Valley received mixed reviews upon its release. The film is often praised for its ambitious themes and strong atmosphere, successfully creating a sense of dread and melancholy in the unconventional setting.
Strengths:
- Edward Norton’s performance as Harlan is frequently cited as the film’s centerpiece—a compelling and subtle portrayal of a man living in denial of modern reality.
- The film’s initial setup and tone, blending the Western genre with suburban neo-noir, are considered intriguing and stylish.
- Evan Rachel Wood also garnered praise for capturing the bored, rebellious energy of her character.
Criticisms:
- Many critics felt the film’s narrative loses focus in the second half, becoming “clumsy” or “over-extended.”
- The transition from a slow-burn character study to a full-blown thriller/crime story was seen by some as sudden and strained, with the escalating violence feeling unearned or unnecessary.
Overall, it’s considered a thoughtful, if flawed, exploration of American myths and alienation, anchored by excellent lead performances.
