Plot Summary

The film centers on Joe and Betty, a middle-aged couple who own a fish market in New Jersey. Their comfortable but somewhat unexciting life is disrupted when Nick, a young drifter on the run from the police, seeks refuge in their store. Joe, despite initial reservations, takes pity on Nick and offers him a job and a place to stay in their home. Nick quickly proves himself adept at the fish business, earning Joe’s respect. However, an undeniable attraction sparks between Nick and Betty, leading to a passionate affair.

Their illicit relationship becomes increasingly complicated when Joe and Betty’s adult son, Danny, returns home from Los Angeles, where he was trying to make it as a comedian. Danny quickly becomes suspicious of the dynamic between Nick and his mother. Tensions escalate as Danny uncovers the affair and reveals it to his father, leading to a tragic confrontation that results in Joe’s death from a heart attack. The film culminates in Nick’s throat being slashed by a vengeful Danny.
