Movie Summary

The film centers on Seymour “Swede” Levov (Ewan McGregor), a successful Jewish American businessman and former high school star athlete living what appears to be the quintessential American Dream in the post-World War II era. He has a beautiful former beauty queen wife, Dawn (Jennifer Connelly), a thriving glove factory, and an idyllic life in rural New Jersey. However, the social and political turmoil of the 1960s shatters his perfect world when his beloved teenage daughter, Merry (Dakota Fanning), becomes radicalized by the Vietnam War and racial unrest. In 1968, Merry is implicated in a bombing at the local post office that kills a bystander, and she subsequently disappears, going into hiding.

The movie follows Swede’s desperate and agonizing search for Merry over many years, as he grapples with the inexplicable actions of his daughter and the disintegration of his family. He encounters various characters who hint at Merry’s whereabouts or motives, including a mysterious young radical named Rita Cohen (Valorie Curry). As Swede pursues his daughter, he is forced to confront the harsh realities beneath the “American pastoral” facade, realizing that his understanding of his family and the world around him was profoundly flawed.

The film explores themes of idealism, disillusionment, the generational divide, and the erosion of the American Dream.

Bold Scenes

The film contains some mature themes and moments that could be considered “bold.” One notable scene involves Rita Cohen, a radical, attempting to seduce Swede in a hotel room as he seeks information about Merry. There’s also a scene where Dawn, Swede’s wife, has a nervous breakdown and appears nude, wearing only a beauty pageant sash, at his business, though little is explicitly shown.

The movie also depicts Merry’s increasing radicalization and her involvement in the bombing, as well as the later scenes where Swede finds her living in squalor, practicing extreme asceticism. The intensity of the emotional breakdowns and the dark subject matter contribute to the film’s serious and sometimes disturbing tone.
