Pope Francis, the 266th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church, died at the age of 88 on April 21, 2025. His passing occurred in his residence at the Casa Santa Marta within Vatican City. The news was confirmed by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Camerlengo, at 9:45 a.m. local time.

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he was the first pope from the Americas, the first Jesuit pope, and the first non-European pontiff in over a millennium. Elected on March 13, 2013, Pope Francis became known for his humble demeanor, progressive thinking, and advocacy for the marginalized. His tenure focused on inclusion, care for the environment, and promoting global unity.

Despite facing numerous health issues, including recent complications from double pneumonia, he remained active in his role and delivered his final Easter blessing just a day before his death.

Following Vatican protocol, preparations for the conclave to elect a new pope are underway, with the gathering of cardinals expected to take place between May 6 and May 11, 2025.
