The Bell 206 helicopter, operated by New York Helicopter Tours, took off from the Downtown Manhattan Heliport at 2:59 p.m. for a sightseeing tour. Approximately 16 minutes into the flight, near the George Washington Bridge, the aircraft experienced an in-flight breakup, causing it to crash upside-down into the Hudson River near Pier 40. Witnesses reported hearing loud noises and seeing parts of the helicopter, including the rotor blades, detach before the crash.
Emergency responders arrived promptly, but all occupants were pronounced dead, either at the scene or shortly after being transported to nearby hospitals. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident. Preliminary reports suggest possible mechanical failure, but the exact cause remains under investigation.
In response to the tragedy, U.S. President Donald Trump and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed their condolences to the victims’ families.
This incident marks one of the deadliest helicopter crashes in New York City since 2018.
