The incident occurred on January 8, 2025, when embers from the Palisades Fire ignited the roof of his family’s Malibu cottage. His mother, author Shelley Sykes, attempted to extinguish the flames but was hindered by a lack of water supply, as the local water company had turned off the water. Additionally, a broken arm prevented her from physically assisting her son. Despite her efforts to seek help, firefighters arrived too late, and it is believed that Rory succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning.
