Dame Joan Plowright, a legendary British actress and widow of Sir Laurence Olivier, has passed away at the age of 95. She died peacefully on January 16, 2025, at Denville Hall in London, a residence for retired actors, surrounded by her loved ones.

About Dame Joan Plowright

Born on October 28, 1929, in Brigg, Lincolnshire, Plowright had a career spanning more than six decades. Her contributions to theater, film, and television earned her widespread acclaim. She received numerous accolades, including a Tony Award in 1961 for A Taste of Honey and two Golden Globe Awards in 1993 for her roles in Enchanted April and Stalin. Her performance in Enchanted April also earned her an Academy Award nomination.

Plowright married Sir Laurence Olivier in 1961, and they had three children together. Their marriage lasted until Olivier’s death in 1989. In recognition of her remarkable contributions to drama, she was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2004.

In 2014, Plowright retired from acting due to vision loss caused by macular degeneration. Her final on-screen appearance was in the 2018 documentary Nothing Like a Dame, where she reflected on her career alongside other iconic British actresses.

In tribute to her legacy, theaters in London’s West End will dim their lights for two minutes on January 21, 2025. Plowright is survived by her three children and four grandchildren.
