Artistic swimming, previously known as synchronized swimming, has been part of the Summer Olympics since 1984. Initially, the sport included solo and duet events exclusively for women.
In 2017, the international governing body for aquatic sports rebranded the sport from “synchronized swimming” to “artistic swimming.” This change aimed to clarify that synchronization refers to harmony with the music, not just the athletes’ movements.

At this year’s Paris Olympics, the competition features two medal events: Duet and Team categories. With a total of 96 athletes competing, this marks the smallest number of participants since the 1996 Atlanta Games.
