The Paris Olympics opening ceremony on July 26 broke numerous traditions. Delegations from over 200 nations sailed along the Seine River, passing iconic Paris landmarks, with singer Celine Dion making her first public appearance in years. This unique ceremony, held on water, was a deliberate choice by France to showcase the improved health of the Seine River, which had long been closed due to pollution.
The ceremony also featured ‘Hindi’ among the six languages used in infographics to honor the contributions of prominent French women in a segment called ‘sisterhood’.
French President Emmanuel Macron officially declared the Games open, initiating 16 days of competitions. The grand ceremony, which lasted four hours, saw French judo legend Teddy Riner and sprint icon Marie-Jose Perec jointly light the Olympic cauldron, emphasizing the Games’ gender-neutral focus. The cauldron was attached to a giant hot-air balloon that ascended into the Parisian night.
