The first official teaser of ‘A Complete Unknown’ features Timothee Chalamet performing Bob Dylan’s “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall” in his own voice.
Audiences have finally gotten a glimpse of Timothée Chalamet’s transformation into Bob Dylan for the upcoming biopic, “A Complete Unknown,” set to release in theaters this December. A pressing question among fans is whether Chalamet actually sings in the film, and if the voice in the teaser trailer is his own.
“A Complete Unknown,” produced by Searchlight Pictures, is directed and written by James Mangold, known for “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.” Mangold co-wrote the screenplay with Jay Cocks, adapting it from Elijah Wald’s 2015 book “Dylan Goes Electric!”

Set in early 1960s New York, the film chronicles the rapid rise of 19-year-old Minnesota musician Bob Dylan. It follows Dylan’s journey from a folk singer to a global sensation, culminating in his iconic electric performance at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965.
The film boasts a star-studded cast, including Monica Barbaro as Dylan’s collaborator and former lover Joan Baez, Elle Fanning as Sylvie Russo, another artist who dated Dylan in the early ’60s, Edward Norton as Pete Seeger, Boyd Holbrook as Johnny Cash, and Scoot McNairy as Woody Guthrie.
The first official teaser, released on July 24, features Chalamet performing Dylan’s “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall” from the 1963 album “The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan.” But is it really Chalamet’s voice?
Indeed, Timothée Chalamet lends his own vocals to “A Complete Unknown.” Director James Mangold confirmed to Collider in April 2023 that Chalamet sings in the movie, rather than having Dylan’s voice dubbed over. According to IndieWire, Chalamet also took singing and guitar lessons to prepare for the role.
This is not Chalamet’s first time showcasing his singing abilities in a film. He sang in the 2023 musical “Wonka,” which included seven musical numbers. He contributed to the soundtrack with songs like “You Never Had Chocolate Like This,” “A World of Your Own,” “Sorry, Noodle,” and “Pure Imagination.”

Chalamet, who attended Manhattan’s Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, also sang in the 2019 film “A Rainy Day in New York.” A video even surfaced of him performing “Sweet Charity” in a school play at LaGuardia. With his musical background and previous projects, audiences can look forward to more musical roles from Chalamet in the future.
