Jack Black took to Instagram on Tuesday morning, expressing his shock at Gass’s remarks during the Sunday show in Sydney. “I was blindsided by what was said at the show on Sunday,” Black wrote.
“I would never condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form. After much reflection, I no longer feel it is appropriate to continue the Tenacious D tour, and all future creative plans are on hold. I am grateful to the fans for their support and understanding.”
During the performance in Sydney, Black and a “robot” presented Gass with a birthday cake. As Black invited Gass to make a wish, Gass quipped, “Don’t miss Trump next time,” which was met with laughter and applause from the audience. The incident quickly went viral on social media, prompting Australian Senator Ralph Babet to call for the duo’s visas to be revoked and for their deportation.
In response to the backlash, Gass issued an apology on Tuesday. The Hollywood Reporter later confirmed that Gass had been dropped by his agent at Greene Talent, led by Michael Greene.
“The line I improvised onstage Sunday night in Sydney was highly inappropriate, dangerous and a terrible mistake,” Gass stated on Instagram. “I don’t condone violence of any kind, in any form, against anyone. What happened was a tragedy, and I’m incredibly sorry for my severe lack of judgment. I profoundly apologize to those I’ve let down and truly regret any pain I’ve caused.”
