Rudy Giuliani, the former New York mayor now disgraced for his efforts to overturn Donald Trump’s election defeat, was disbarred in New York on Tuesday. This marks another consequence for the individuals who propagated false claims of widespread voter fraud following Joe Biden’s 2020 presidential victory.

Facing charges in Georgia and Arizona, Giuliani is also named as an unindicted co-conspirator in special counsel Jack Smith’s federal case against Trump regarding election interference. The New York order stated Giuliani had no “good faith basis” to believe the election fraud claims he promoted.

The New York appeals court highlighted false statements Giuliani made at a post-election press conference at Four Seasons Total Landscaping in Philadelphia, concurrent with news outlets declaring Biden’s victory.

The court’s decision indicated these falsehoods were meant to unjustly support Giuliani’s assertion that the 2020 election was stolen from Trump due to widespread fraud.

Giuliani has faced significant repercussions for his actions, arguably more so than Trump. He is also at risk of disbarment in Washington, D.C., where the Bar’s Board of Professional Responsibility has recommended his disbarment.

In May, WABC radio in New York suspended Giuliani and canceled his show to avoid potential legal issues stemming from his continued false claims about the 2020 election.

A federal jury awarded $148 million to two Georgia poll workers, Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss, after Giuliani was found liable for falsely accusing them of election fraud, claims which were entirely unfounded. The baseless allegations, fueled by a misinterpreted security video, led to a barrage of racist attacks and threats against the mother-daughter pair.

During the New York disciplinary proceedings, Giuliani admitted that thousands of votes were not cast in the names of deceased individuals in Philadelphia, contrary to his previous false assertions. The overseeing referee noted that Giuliani committed “16 acts of falsehoods,” which were deliberate and designed to deceive.

The decision also accused Rudy Giuliani of attempting to mislead officials during the disciplinary process.

Ted Goodman, a spokesman for Giuliani, denounced the decision as “flawed” and “politically and ideologically corrupted.” Barry Kamins, Giuliani’s attorney, stated they are considering their options for appeal, expressing Giuliani’s disappointment with the decision.
