Robert Downey Jr. is making a surprising return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but this time as Doctor Doom in the new “Avengers” movie titled “Avengers: Doomsday.”

This film will be directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, who are also returning to Marvel. The Russo brothers are set to direct two new “Avengers” films: “Doomsday,” which will introduce Victor von Doom/Doctor Doom, and “Avengers: Secret Wars.”

Although Downey had hinted in recent interviews that he was open to returning to Marvel, fans expected him to reprise his iconic role as Iron Man/Tony Stark. His return as the villainous Victor von Doom was a stunning revelation for the audience at Marvel’s San Diego Comic-Con presentation. Downey made a triumphant appearance in Hall H on Saturday evening to announce his comeback.

Downey first appeared as Tony Stark in 2008’s “Iron Man,” the inaugural film in the interconnected Marvel Cinematic Universe created by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige.

Over the next 11 years, Downey portrayed Stark in 10 Marvel films, including “Iron Man 2,” “Iron Man 3,” “The Incredible Hulk,” “Captain America: Civil War,” “The Avengers,” “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” “Avengers: Infinity War,” and “Avengers: Endgame.”

“Endgame” marked the end of Iron Man’s journey with his character’s death. Last December, Kevin Feige emphasized to Vanity Fair that they had no plans to undermine the emotional impact of Iron Man’s demise.

“We are going to keep that moment and not touch that moment again,” Feige said about Iron Man’s death. “We all worked very hard for many years to get to that, and we would never want to magically undo it in any way.”

Despite not returning as Iron Man, Downey had expressed interest in rejoining the Marvel franchise. In an interview with Esquire magazine after winning an Oscar for his role in “Oppenheimer,” Downey was asked if he would consider returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The actor enthusiastically confirmed his willingness.

“Happily. It’s too integral a part of my DNA,” Downey said. “That role chose me. And look, I always say, ‘Never, ever bet against Kevin Feige.’ It is a losing bet. He’s the house. He will always win.”

Downey’s portrayal of Victor von Doom is another highlight in a remarkable year for the actor. His performance as Lewis Strauss in Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” earned him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in March.

Additionally, Downey recently appeared in Park Chan-wook’s mini-series “The Sympathizer” on HBO, where he played CIA operative Claude and several other roles, garnering an Emmy nomination for supporting actor in a limited series or anthology.
