President Joe Biden tested positive for Covid-19 while in Las Vegas for a series of events, the White House announced on Wednesday.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre revealed that Biden tested positive after his first event in Las Vegas. “He is vaccinated, boosted, and experiencing mild symptoms,” Jean-Pierre stated. “He will be returning to Delaware to self-isolate, but will continue to perform all of his duties fully. The White House will provide regular updates on his condition.”

Biden’s return to Delaware was already planned following his trip to Las Vegas.

The president’s doctor, Dr. Kevin O’Connor, reported that Biden was tested after showing upper respiratory symptoms. His symptoms included a runny nose, a nonproductive cough, and general malaise. He has begun taking Paxlovid, a medication known to reduce the risk of severe illness.

Biden does not have a fever, and his respiratory rate is normal, according to Dr. O’Connor.

Upon arriving at the Las Vegas-area airport, Biden responded to questions about his health, saying, “Good, I feel good.”

On his way to Delaware, Biden tweeted, “I’m sick,” followed by another tweet criticizing Elon Musk and his wealthy allies, urging donations to his re-election campaign. Musk had recently endorsed former President Donald Trump following an assassination attempt.

Top campaign officials Jen O’Malley Dillon and Julie Chavez Rodriguez informed campaign staff about Biden’s Covid status via email, reassuring them that the president is fine and looking forward to resuming the campaign trail once he recovers.

In a recent interview with BET, Biden mentioned he would withdraw from the presidential race if he developed a medical condition preventing him from running.

The CDC’s latest guidelines recommend that individuals who test positive for Covid should stay home until their symptoms improve and they have been fever-free without medication for at least 24 hours.
