Gypsy Rose Blanchard, known for orchestrating the murder of her mother after years of being forced to fake severe illnesses, revealed on Tuesday that she is pregnant. In a YouTube video, Blanchard announced that her baby is due in January, a little over a year after her release from a women’s prison in Missouri.

“I just want to be a good mother for my child,” she said emotionally. “I want to be everything my mother wasn’t.”

Blanchard’s case gained national attention when it was uncovered that her mother, Clauddine “Dee Dee” Blanchard, who was killed in 2015, had kept her daughter captive, forcing her to use a wheelchair and feeding tube. Dee Dee had convinced doctors to perform unnecessary procedures by claiming Gypsy Rose’s medical records were lost during Hurricane Katrina.

Blanchard’s lawyer explained that Dee Dee had Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a disorder where caregivers fabricate or induce illness in someone for sympathy and attention. The mother-daughter pair received charitable donations, including a house from Habitat for Humanity.

At 23, Gypsy Rose handed a knife to her then-boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, who stabbed Dee Dee while Gypsy hid in the bathroom. The pair fled to Wisconsin, where they were arrested. Godejohn is serving a life sentence, while Blanchard received a reduced sentence due to the abuse she suffered. She later forgave her mother and herself, as she shared in her e-book and the Lifetime docuseries, “The Prison Confessions of Gypsy Rose Blanchard.”

Blanchard’s story has been featured in the 2017 HBO documentary “Mommy Dead and Dearest” and the 2019 Hulu miniseries “The Act.”

In her new video, Blanchard addressed doubts about her readiness for motherhood, stating that no one is ever fully prepared. “It’s an amazing feeling when your whole world shifts and it’s not about you anymore,” she said. “It’s about this tiny little life inside you that you have to protect, love, and care for.”

Blanchard revealed that the baby’s father is Ken Urker, a former prison pen pal. Although she married and then split from Ryan Scott Anderson, she reunited with Urker. Despite the unplanned pregnancy, both are excited and committed to building a family together.

“I couldn’t be happier,” she said, acknowledging the unconventional nature of their relationship. “Everything that has happened to me has led me to this moment, and that’s a blessing.”
