Though the Congress Party finished a distant third in the recent Odisha assembly elections, it has achieved a historic milestone by electing the state’s first Muslim woman as a legislative assembly member (MLA).

Sofia Firdous, in her electoral debut, won the Barabati-Cuttack seat for the Congress, defeating BJP’s Purna Chandra Mahapatra by 8,001 votes. Firdous secured 53,339 votes, while Mahapatra received 45,338 votes, as per the Election Commission of India (ECI).

Meet Sofia Firdous

Political Background: Sofia Firdous hails from a political family. Her father, Mohammed Moaquim, is a senior Congress leader in Odisha. Firdous was fielded by the party after her father’s disqualification due to a conviction in a loan fraud case.

Educational Qualifications: The 32-year-old Firdous holds a Civil Engineering degree from the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) University in Bhubaneswar. She also completed an Executive General Management Program at the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore (IIMB), in 2022.

Professional Involvement: Last year, Firdous was elected as the president of the Bhubaneswar wing of the Confederation of Real Estate Developers’ Associations of India (CREDAI). She currently serves as the Eastern Zone Coordinator of the CREDAI women’s wing.

Clean Record: According to her affidavit filed with the ECI, Firdous has no criminal charges against her.

Personal Life: Sofia Firdous, whose total assets are around ₹5 crore with liabilities of approximately ₹28 lakh, is married to entrepreneur Sheikh Mairajul Haque.
