At the G7 Summit, an unexpected moment between UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni caught everyone’s attention. Upon his arrival, PM Meloni welcomed Sunak with a hug and a kiss, which quickly became a trending topic online.
Giorgia Meloni is hosting the two-day G7 Summit, attended by several world leaders, including Rishi Sunak. As Sunak approached, he was greeted warmly by Meloni, and images of their exchange soon went viral.

The footage shows Sunak meeting Meloni, who offers a hug and kiss. They share a laugh and engage in conversation before posing for photographs. However, social media users quickly noted an awkward moment during their greeting.
One user on X remarked, “Rishi Sunak being greeted by Giorgia Meloni at G7 looked a lot like he went in for a snog and she pulled back. There was then a real ‘eurgh, smelly breath’ energy.”
Another comment highlighted the scene, stating, “Rishi Sunak greets Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni during a welcome ceremony on day one of the 50th G7 summit.” A third user humorously added, “Don’t lean in, Rishi!”
In addition, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also attending the summit, marking his first international trip after securing a third term in office following the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Before his departure, Modi expressed his anticipation for the summit, stating, “At the invitation of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, I am travelling to Apulia region in Italy to participate in the G7 Outreach Summit on 14 June 2024. I am glad that my first visit in the third consecutive term is to Italy for the G-7 Summit.”

The G7, consisting of the US, the UK, France, Italy, Germany, Canada, and Japan, is being chaired by Italy this year. The summit is taking place from June 13 to 15, 2024, at Borgo Egnazia in Fasano, Apulia. One of the main priorities under Italy’s presidency is the defense of the rules-based international system.
