On April 3, Taiwan was rocked by a potent earthquake, resulting in collapsed buildings and widespread impacts across the island, as reported by AP. Taiwan’s earthquake monitoring agency registered the quake at 7.2 magnitude, while the US Geological Survey estimated it at 7.5. In response, authorities in Taiwan, Japan, and the Philippines issued tsunami warnings and evacuation advisories for coastal regions.

Wu Chien-fu, the head of Taipei’s Seismology Centre, noted that this quake marked the most intense seismic event in 25 years. It resonated deeply across Taiwan and its surrounding waters, reminiscent of the devastating 1999 earthquake that claimed thousands of lives.
Reports from Reuters indicated that the tremors were felt as far as Shanghai, and various regions of China’s Fujian province also experienced the quake’s impact.
The earthquake left a trail of destruction, with television footage capturing buildings trembling in Hualien, the epicenter. Over 26 buildings, primarily in Hualien, collapsed, trapping approximately 20 individuals and prompting ongoing rescue efforts. Rockslides and landslides were reported along Taiwan’s eastern coast.
Despite the widespread damage, Taipei city authorities reported no major incidents. Public transportation services, including the MRT and high-speed rail, resumed operations swiftly, albeit with delays for safety inspections. Similarly, operations at the Southern Taiwan Science Park remained uninterrupted, including facilities operated by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC).

In light of the seismic activity, authorities issued tsunami warnings across Taiwan, Japan, and the Philippines. Japan’s meteorological agency projected waves of up to 3 meters, with initial reports confirming the arrival of smaller tsunamis on some islands. The Philippines also issued evacuation advisories for coastal areas facing the Pacific Ocean, urging residents to seek higher ground.
