World Water day is celebrated on March 22 every year. It is celebrated to raise awareness about the importance of water and to support the achievement of United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6, water and sanitation for all by 2030.

Almost all of the liquid fresh water in the world is groundwater. So, protection of groundwater is very important as it is one of the basic necessities of all living beings. Water is essential for survival on earth.

The theme for World Water Day 2024 is “Water for Peace.” The competition for limited fresh water resources frequently ignites disputes at various levels, from individuals and communities to entire nations. Surprisingly, the United Nations (UN) reports that only 24 out of 153 countries have implemented water-sharing agreements. In order to prevent conflicts and ensure equitable access to essential water resources across international borders, prioritizing water conservation measures is crucial.

In 1992, United Nations held a conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro. In the same year, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution to celebrate World Water Day on March 22 every year. In 1993, the first World Water Day was celebrated.

Only that specific area can understand the real importance of freshwater where is the scarcity of it. Almost 2.2 billion people living without access to safe water. So, World Water day helps in spreading awareness about the safewater.

Water is used in daily routine from drinking to bathing to washing clothes. Human body is made up of 70% water. From this the need of water for humans can be understood. Life couldn’t exist without water.
