Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, commonly known as Veer Savarkar, was a revolutionary and political leader who played a significant role in India’s struggle for independence. He was born on May 28, 1883, in Bhagur, a small village near Nashik in Maharashtra, India.
Savarkar was an outstanding student and obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Arts from Fergusson College in Pune. He then went to London to study law, where he became involved in the Indian nationalist movement.
He was one of the founders of the Free India Society, which aimed to secure Indian independence from British rule.
In 1909, Savarkar was arrested for his alleged involvement in the assassination of Sir Curzon Wylie, a British official in Mumbai. He was extradited to India from London, where he was tried and sentenced to life imprisonment in the Cellular Jail in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. He was incarcerated for more than a decade and was subjected to brutal treatment by the British authorities.
During his imprisonment, Savarkar wrote extensively on a wide range of topics, including politics, history, and religion. He is best known for his advocacy of Hindutva, an ideology that emphasizes the cultural and historical roots of Hinduism as a unifying force for the Indian nation.
After his release from prison in 1924, Savarkar continued to be active in the Indian nationalist movement. He founded the Hindu Mahasabha, a political party that espoused Hindu nationalism. He also played a key role in the formation of the Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha, a broader coalition of Hindu nationalist groups.
Veer Savarkar passed away on February 26, 1966, in Mumbai, India, at the age of 83. He remains a controversial figure in Indian politics and is celebrated by some as a freedom fighter and by others as a Hindu nationalist ideologue.
