National Mathematics Day 2022: This day is celebrated on December 22 every year in India. It marks the birth anniversary of genius Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan.

He was born on December 22, 1887 in a Tamil Brahmin family at Erode, Tamil Nadu.

He had no interest in the non-mathematical subjects. That’s why he had failed in all other subjects in college except Mathematics.

In 1912, he started working as a clerk in the Madras Port trust where his colleagues identified his calibre and referred him to GH Hardy in the Trinity College of Cambridge University.

Ramanujan completed his B.Sc (Bachelor of Science) degree from Trinity College of Cambridge University in 1916.

He was elected to the London Mathematical Society in 1917.

In 1918, he was elected to the Fellow of Royal Society for his work on elliptic functions and theory of numbers.

In the same year, he became the first Indian to be elected a Fellow of Trinity College.

Professor GH Hardy and Ramanujan worked a lot together and did many researches in mathematics.

The number ‘1729’ is known as Hardy-Ramanujan number. Due to illness, when Ramanujan was in hospital, Hardy came to meet him in the taxi number ‘1729’ and said to Ramanujan that it is very common number but Ramanujan replied, “it is a very interesting number; it is the smallest number expressible as the sum of two cubes in two different ways.”

Ramanujan’s health was not good. London’s cold was not fit for his health. That’s why he returned to India in 1919.

After a year, on April 26, 1920 he died in a very young age of 32.

In 1991, Robert Kanigel wrote the biography of Srinivasa Ramanujan named “The Man Who Knew Infinity: A Life of the Genius Ramanujan.”

In 2015, a film has been made with the same title on the life of Ramanujan.
