Heath Streak led Zimbabwe in 68 one-day internationals, including the 2003 World Cup in southern Africa, where Zimbabwe advanced to the Super Six stage, leaving an indelible mark on the cricketing world.
Zimbabwean cricket legend Heath Streak, aged 49, passed away on Sunday, as confirmed by his wife through a heartfelt social media announcement. His courageous battle against colon cancer has come to an end.
“In the early hours of this morning, Sunday 3 September, the greatest love of my life and the father of my beautiful children, was carried to be with the angels from his home where he wished to spend his last days surrounded by his family and closest loved ones,” Nadine Streak wrote.
Heath Streak, a remarkable fast bowler and a proficient batsman, played a pivotal role for Zimbabwe’s cricket teams during the late 1990s and early 2000s, often challenging the cricket giants.
However, his cricketing career took a tragic turn when he received an eight-year ban for violating the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) anti-corruption code.
In May of this year, news of Streak’s serious illness emerged, followed by reports in August that he had passed away, initially triggered by a social media message from his former teammate, Henry Olonga.
Streak himself clarified his survival, but not before a flood of tributes poured in from his former colleagues and adversaries alike.
Heath Streak’s Cricket Career
A robust fast bowler with the ability to extract movement from challenging pitches, Streak made a significant impact, claiming 236 wickets at an average of 28.14 in 65 Test matches. No other Zimbabwean has achieved more than 80 Test wickets.
In Tests, he contributed 1,990 runs at an average of 22.35, ranking seventh on the country’s all-time list. His pinnacle moment was his unbeaten 127 against the West Indies in Harare in 2003, marking his only Test century.

Heath Streak’s all-round prowess shone in one-day internationals, where he secured 237 wickets, a remarkable 104 more than his nearest rival, and scored 2,901 runs across 187 matches.
He frequently stood as a lone warrior for his underdog nation against formidable opponents. A quintessential example of his brilliance was his six for 73 performance against India, even as they piled up 366 runs in a 2005 Test match in Harare.
Streak served twice as Zimbabwe’s captain, albeit with a tumultuous interruption due to a dispute with Zimbabwe Cricket in 2001, centered around pay and racial quota concerns.
Among his captaincy highlights was Zimbabwe’s historic Test victory against India in Harare in 2001, where he took seven wickets in the match, dismissing the legendary Sachin Tendulkar twice, and contributed 40 runs in the first innings.

He led Zimbabwe in 68 one-day internationals, including the 2003 World Cup in southern Africa, where Zimbabwe advanced to the Super Six stage, leaving an indelible mark on the cricketing world.
In 2004, he was relieved of his captaincy role during a tumultuous period in Zimbabwean cricket, marked by a rebellion by 15 prominent players against the cricket administration. Consequently, the national team, severely weakened, temporarily lost its Test match status.
His international cricket career concluded in 2005.
Following a stint playing for the English county Warwickshire, he transitioned into a coaching role, initially serving as Zimbabwe’s bowling coach in 2009. His coaching journey took him to various corners of the cricketing world, including India, Bangladesh, England, and Scotland.
Heath Streak held the position of Zimbabwe’s head coach from 2016 to 2018, but his tenure came to an end when the team failed to secure qualification for the 2019 World Cup.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) imposed an eight-year ban on him for sharing player information and contact details with an unnamed individual in India, and for accepting payment that included $35,000 in Bitcoin.
While Heath Streak took responsibility for his actions, he maintained that he had never been involved in match-fixing.
