Joshi, a resident of Talur village in Bastar district, created an online bank account in Sunny Leone’s name and had been receiving the monthly payments since the scheme’s inception in March 2024.

The fraud was uncovered when officials noticed the unusual beneficiary name during a routine audit.

Further investigation revealed that Joshi had listed “Johnny Sins,” an American adult film actor, as Sunny Leone’s husband in the application.

District Collector Haris S has ordered a thorough investigation into the matter and the seizure of the bank account.

An FIR has been lodged against Joshi, and authorities are examining how the fraudulent registration bypassed the verification process.

The incident has sparked political debate, with the opposition Congress party alleging widespread corruption in the Mahtari Vandan Yojana.

Deepak Baij, the State Congress chief, claimed that over 50% of the beneficiaries under this scheme are fake.

In response, Deputy Chief Minister Arun Sao defended the program, stating that the Congress is upset because women are now receiving assistance they didn’t receive during the Congress’s previous term.

The Mahtari Vandan Yojana, introduced by the BJP government, aims to provide financial assistance to married women in Chhattisgarh by depositing ₹1,000 per month into their bank accounts.

This incident highlights the challenges in verifying beneficiaries and ensuring the integrity of welfare schemes.
