Why is National Farmers Day celebrated on December 23?

Farmers Day is celebrated on the birth anniversary of Chaudhary Charan Singh, the fifth Prime Minister of India. In 2001, the then Government of India announced that National Farmers Day would be celebrated every year on December 23, the day on which Chaudhary Charan Singh was born.

Why is National Farmers Day celebrated on the birth anniversary of Chaudhary Charan Singh?

Chaudhary Charan Singh made number of reforms for the welfare of farmers when he was the Prime Minister of India. Farmers Day is celebrated to commemorate his work towards the farmers. 

He was born on December 23, 1902 in the middle-class peasant’s family in Noorpur, Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. He completed his bachelor’s degree in science in 1923 and then post-graduate from Agra University in 1925. He remained the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh in 1970.

Chaudhary Charan Singh was also a practitioner of law and the active participant of freedom struggle of India.

He was the fifth Prime Minister of India from 1979-1980. During his very short tenure, he introduced many reforms for the welfare and betterment of farmers. As belonged to peasant’s family, he was able to understand the position of the farmers.

To give relief to farmers from the moneylenders and their atrocities, he introduced Debt Redemption Bill back in 1939. He also designed the Land Holding Act 1960, which came into force when he was the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. Historians frequently refer to him as the ‘Champion of India’s peasants’.

Farmers play a pivotal role in the growth of economy. Farmers Day is celebrated in many other countries like Ghana, South Korea, United States, Pakistan and Zambia to honour the farmers and their contributions towards the nation.
