Sanjay Roy: A Civic Volunteer on a Modest Salary
Civic volunteers, like Roy, are contract workers hired to assist police with tasks such as traffic management and disaster response. They typically earn around Rs 12,000 per month. Roy began his tenure with the Kolkata Police’s disaster management group in 2019 but was later transferred to the police welfare cell.
Eventually, he found himself stationed at the police outpost within RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, giving him unrestricted access to the hospital’s departments.
Involved in a Bribery Racket
Sanjay Roy was allegedly involved in a racket that preyed on vulnerable patients and their families. He reportedly accepted bribes to secure hospital admissions and even helped arrange beds at nearby nursing homes for those who couldn’t find space at the government facility.
Pretended to Be a Cop, Showed No Remorse
Despite not being a full-fledged police officer, Roy frequently posed as one, wearing a t-shirt emblazoned with “KP” (Kolkata Police) and riding a bike with a matching tag. He often stayed at police barracks, using his connections to maintain the charade. His colleagues, many of whom were also civic volunteers, believed he was a legitimate police officer.
During interrogation, Roy quickly confessed to his crimes, displaying a disturbing lack of remorse. Reports indicate that he told the police, “Hang me if you want,” in a cold, detached manner.

The body of the young doctor, a second-year postgraduate student specializing in chest medicine, was discovered in the hospital’s seminar hall last Friday. She had been on duty the previous night, and her body bore numerous injury marks. A preliminary autopsy revealed signs of sexual assault, leading her father to assert that she had been raped and murdered within the hospital.
Sanjay Roy was arrested after his suspicious behavior caught the attention of authorities. Sources suggest that he had a history of inappropriate conduct toward women at the hospital, raising questions about why he was allowed such extensive access in the first place.
