Sinéad O’Connor, aged 56, was found unresponsive at her London residence on July 26, 2023.
One year after Sinéad O’Connor’s passing, her official cause of death has been disclosed. The Irish Independent reported on Saturday (July 27) that the death certificate of the renowned “Nothing Compares 2 U” singer indicates she succumbed to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma.

The document specifies that O’Connor’s death was due to the “exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and bronchial asthma along with a low-grade lower respiratory tract infection.” The certificate was registered by her husband, John Reynolds, in London on Wednesday (July 24).
O’Connor, aged 56, was found unresponsive at her London residence on July 26, 2023. The following day, police announced they were not treating her death as suspicious and had referred the case to the coroner’s office to establish the cause of death.
In January, Southwark Coroner’s Court in London confirmed that O’Connor died of natural causes, subsequently ceasing their involvement in the investigation.
At the time of her death, O’Connor’s family expressed their profound grief, stating, “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.”

Throughout her life, the Irish singer battled mental health issues, including PTSD, depression, and suicidal tendencies. Her 17-year-old son Shane tragically died by suicide in 2022. O’Connor is survived by three children, including her 28-year-old daughter Roisin Waters.
