Over the next two weeks, athletes will compete for gold, but on Friday, a different kind of metal took center stage.

Amid performances from “Les Miserables” and “Carmen,” the French heavy-metal band Gojira delivered a head-banging set during the Olympics opening ceremony, offering viewers a dose of cultural contrast.

Introduced by a headless Marie Antoinette, Gojira rocked the Conciergerie along the River Seine.

Who is Gojira, the metal band at the opening ceremony?

Gojira consists of Joe Duplantier, Mario Duplantier, Christian Andreu, and Jean-Michel Labadie. They played at the Conciergerie, a historic residence of French kings that became a prison during the French Revolution, famously housing Marie Antoinette. The band performed alongside singer Marina Viotti.

Named after the legendary kaiju Godzilla, Gojira was originally called Godzilla until 2001. They have been nominated for three Grammy Awards and released their latest album, “Fortitude,” in 2021.

Gojira‘s music spans various subgenres, including progressive metal and groove metal.

Marie Antoinette might have lost her head, but if she hadn’t, she’d be headbanging in 2024 thanks to Gojira.
