National Science Day 2023:- On February 28, 1928 Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman discovered a phenomenon of scattering of photons which was later known as ‘Raman Effect’ after his name.

Every year, February 28 is celebrated as National Science Day in India. This day commemorates the physicist C.V. Raman’s discovery which was named after his name – ‘Raman Effect’. National Science day encourages scientific minds and tells the importance of Science in day to day life.

National Science Day 2023:- Why is Science Day celebrated on February 28?

On February 28, 1928 Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman discovered a phenomenon of scattering of photons which was later known as ‘Raman Effect’ after his name. In 1930, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in the field of physics for his remarkable discovery. This was India’s first Nobel prize in the field of science.

In 1986, the National Council for Science and Technology Communication asked the Centre government to designate February 28 as National Science day, the day when Raman effect was discovered. Then the government of India accepted this and declared the February 28 as National Science Day. The first National Science Day was celebrated on February 28, 1987.

National Science Day 2023:- Theme

Every year, a new theme is decided on National Science Day. The theme of National Science Day 2023 is “Global Science for Global Well-being”.

Besides remembering Sir C.V. Raman, this day also shows the importance of Science and the Scientists. The Government of India felicitates Scientists who have done exceptional work in the field of science.

The youth get encouraged towards science and the government gives opportunity to the scientific minded citizens of the country. National Science day is celebrated in schools, colleges, educational institutions and science institutions of the country.

The celebrations also include public speech, radio-TV talk shows, exhibitions of science movie, science exhibition based on themes and concepts, live projects and researches demonstration, debates, quiz competitions, lectures, science models exhibitions and many more activities.
