Proudly reflecting on her over six-decade-long membership in SAG-AFTRA, Streisand shared a nostalgic moment from her teenage years in Brooklyn, where she dreamed of becoming an actress while indulging in a pint of coffee ice cream and reading movie magazines. Transitioning to a more solemn tone, she dedicated her heartfelt speech to the fellow actors in the auditorium, expressing gratitude for the joy they’ve brought her over the years.
The audience, including a captivated Anne Hathaway, stood in awe as Streisand recounted her admiration for Marlon Brando, her “first crush” and “the most beautiful actor,” in the 1954 film “Guys and Dolls.” Jennifer Aniston, a longtime friend, had the honor of presenting the award, praising Streisand’s unmistakable face, voice, and exceptional talent as a “once-in-a-lifetime” phenomenon. Bradley Cooper surprised the audience with an additional tribute, hailing Streisand as a “true auteur.”
SAG-AFTRA, in choosing Streisand for this distinguished recognition, emphasized her impact on the acting profession. Fran Drescher, the president, referred to her as an “icon and unparalleled talent” who seamlessly wove her brilliance into the industry’s fabric. The Shrine, where the ceremony took place, held a special significance as it was the venue for Streisand’s first major concert in 1963.
Streisand’s remarkable accolade collection includes two Academy Awards, ten Grammys, five Emmy Awards, three Peabody Awards, and a Tony Award. Despite her directorial triumphs with films like “Yentl” and “The Prince of Tides,” she has never received a directing nomination, a fact humorously acknowledged by Billy Crystal in 1992.
