The film Inexorable (2021) is a Belgian-French psychological thriller. Here’s all you need to know about this movie.

Summary
The movie follows Marcel Bellmer, a novelist who had a phenomenal hit with his book also titled Inexorable, but has since struggled with writer’s block. He moves with his wife, Jeanne (who is also his publisher and from a wealthy, established family), and their daughter, Lucie, into Jeanne’s massive, imposing childhood manor after her father’s death.
The move is meant to be a fresh start and a place for Marcel to find inspiration for his next novel. However, their life is disrupted by the mysterious arrival of a young woman named Gloria Bartel. Gloria, claiming to be an avid fan of Marcel’s work, insinuates herself into the family’s life, first through a seemingly chance encounter involving the family’s new dog, and then by taking on a job as an aide/nanny.
As Gloria slowly and insidiously works her way into the household, exploiting the existing tensions and vulnerabilities within the family—Marcel’s creative frustration, Jeanne’s focus on her career, and Lucie’s loneliness—her true, darker motives begin to emerge.
The film builds intense psychological suspense as the newcomer’s agenda unravels, pushing the already fragile family to a violent and catastrophic breaking point, and exposing long-buried secrets.

Review
Inexorable is generally well-received as a stylish and atmospheric psychological thriller, often compared to classic “unwanted guest” or domestic noir films.
- Style and Atmosphere: Reviewers frequently praise the film’s slick direction, strong visual aesthetic, and the director’s effective use of the imposing, old manor house as a central, claustrophobic location. The cinematography and music are noted for building a palpable sense of dread and suspense.
- Themes: The film delves into themes of obsession, class difference, repressed secrets, and the fragile nature of a seemingly perfect bourgeois life. The title itself, Inexorable (meaning relentless or unavoidable), highlights the fatalistic nature of the encounter between Gloria and the Bellmer family.
- Performances: Alba Gaïa Bellugi’s performance as the unsettling and manipulative Gloria is often highlighted as the standout, bringing an unnerving blend of vulnerability and calculated malice to the role. Benoît Poelvoorde also receives recognition for portraying the novelist Marcel’s inner turmoil and flaws.
- Critique: Some critiques mention that the plot relies on familiar genre tropes and that the narrative reveals may be predictable for seasoned thriller fans. A few felt that some of the characters, particularly the wife, Jeanne, were underdeveloped, or that the film’s climax didn’t fully resolve all the underlying ambiguities in a satisfying way.
Overall, it’s considered a visually captivating and tense thriller, especially for fans of European genre cinema. The film has a Rotten Tomatoes score of around 73% based on critic reviews.
