Movie Summary

The film primarily follows the contemporary romance between Sophia Danko (Britt Robertson), a college art student about to embark on her dream career in New York City, and Luke Collins (Scott Eastwood), a former champion bull rider aiming for a comeback. Their worlds are vastly different: Sophia is drawn to the art world and intellectual pursuits, while Luke’s life revolves around the dangerous and demanding sport of bull riding. Despite their contrasting backgrounds and career aspirations, they fall deeply in love.

Their budding relationship takes an unexpected turn when they rescue Ira Levinson (Alan Alda), an elderly man who was involved in a car crash. Sophia begins to visit Ira in the hospital, and he shares with her a collection of letters he wrote to his late wife, Ruth (Oona Chaplin, with Jack Huston playing young Ira in flashbacks).

Through these letters, the film flashes back to the 1940s, depicting the passionate and enduring love story of young Ira and Ruth. Their romance blossoms amidst the challenges of World War II, Ira’s service, and a life-altering injury that leaves him unable to have children. Despite this, their love for each other and their shared passion for art see them through difficult times. Ruth, a schoolteacher, also develops a close bond with a neglected student, Daniel, whom she and Ira try to adopt.

As Sophia reads Ira’s letters, she finds inspiration and guidance for her own relationship with Luke. The parallels between the two couples’ struggles – balancing personal ambitions with love, making sacrifices, and facing life’s hardships – become apparent. Luke’s bull riding career is a constant source of worry for Sophia, especially after he suffers another injury. The film explores whether their love can overcome the obstacles posed by their differing paths and Luke’s dangerous profession.

In a poignant resolution, Ira dies, and an auction is held for his extensive art collection. It’s revealed that the true treasure of his collection is a painting by Daniel, the student Ruth and Ira almost adopted. Whoever buys this modest painting inherits the entire collection. Luke, winning his final bull ride, attends the auction and buys the painting, realizing that Sophia and their future together are more important than his career. This act allows Luke and Sophia to reconcile and embark on their own “longest ride” together, continuing the legacy of enduring love that Ira and Ruth embodied.

Bold Scenes

“The Longest Ride” is rated PG-13, which means it contains some mature content but generally avoids explicit bold scenes. The film depicts the romantic and intimate aspects of the relationships between both couples, particularly Luke and Sophia. This includes:

Passionate kissing and embraces: There are several scenes showing Luke and Sophia kissing and embracing, reflecting their intense connection.

Implied intimacy: While not explicitly graphic, there are scenes that imply sexual intimacy between the main characters, characteristic of a romantic drama aimed at a broader audience. For instance, a scene where a couple runs towards a bedroom, removing clothing, with sex being implied. There are also scenes where characters are shown in bed together, with partial nudity (e.g., bare backs or chests), consistent with a PG-13 rating.

These elements serve to convey the romantic and physical passion within the relationships, rather than being gratuitous.
