Movie Summary
“In Secret” (2013) is an American erotic thriller romance film based on Émile Zola’s 1867 novel “Thérèse Raquin.” Set in 1860s Paris, the story follows Thérèse Raquin, a sexually repressed young woman trapped in a loveless marriage to her sickly cousin, Camille, by her domineering aunt, Madame Raquin. Thérèse’s life is confined to a small shop during the day and evenings spent watching dominoes.

Her monotonous existence is shattered when Camille introduces her to his alluring childhood friend, Laurent LeClaire. Thérèse and Laurent embark on a passionate and illicit affair. Their desire for each other intensifies, leading them to a drastic and tragic decision: to eliminate Camille. They drown him during an outing on a lake.
Madame Raquin is devastated by her son’s death and suffers a stroke, which leaves her incapacitated. However, she overhears Thérèse and Laurent discussing their crime. With immense effort, she manages to alert one of their friends, who then informs the authorities. Facing the consequences of their actions, Thérèse and Laurent choose to take their own lives by drinking poison, dying together in front of Madame Raquin.
