Virat Kohli, one of India’s most celebrated cricketers, has announced his retirement from Test cricket at the age of 36, concluding a remarkable 14-year career in the longest format of the game.

The announcement came via a heartfelt Instagram post on May 12, 2025, where Kohli reflected on his journey and expressed gratitude for the experiences and lessons learned through Test cricket.

Kohli’s retirement follows closely on the heels of Rohit Sharma’s decision to step away from Test cricket, marking the end of an era for Indian cricket.

During his illustrious career, Virat Kohli played 123 Test matches, amassing 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85, including 30 centuries and 31 half-centuries. He also holds the record for the most double centuries by an Indian in Tests, with seven to his name.

As captain from 2014 to 2022, Kohli led India in 68 Tests, securing 40 victories, making him the most successful Indian Test captain and the fourth overall globally. His leadership was instrumental in India’s rise to the top of the Test rankings and included memorable series wins, such as the historic triumph in Australia.

While Kohli has retired from Tests and T20 Internationals, he remains available for One Day Internationals and continues to play in the Indian Premier League for Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
