During the “Saturday Night Live” 50th Anniversary Special on February 16, 2025, Miley Cyrus and Brittany Howard delivered a heartfelt tribute to the late Sinéad O’Connor by performing “Nothing Compares 2 U.” This song, originally written by Prince, was famously covered by O’Connor in 1990.

O’Connor, who passed away in 2023, made a memorable appearance on SNL in 1992 when she tore up a photo of Pope John Paul II to protest the Catholic Church’s handling of child sexual abuse cases. This act became one of the most infamous moments in SNL history.
The anniversary special featured a star-studded lineup, including performances by Paul McCartney, Sabrina Carpenter, and Paul Simon. Steve Martin delivered a humorous opening monologue, and the show included various sketches, such as a mashup of popular characters and the return of beloved segments like “Black Jeopardy.” The event concluded with a performance by Paul McCartney.
Aubrey Plaza also made an appearance during the special, paying tribute to her late husband, Jeff Baena, who passed away in January 2025. Plaza introduced the performance by Cyrus and Howard, wearing a pink tie-dyed T-shirt under a black blazer, reminiscent of the tie-dye outfits she and Baena wore when they married during the COVID pandemic.
The “SNL50: The Anniversary Special” aired live on NBC and was available for streaming on Peacock.
