Despite Roy‘s claims of innocence, Judge Anirban Das found the circumstantial evidence sufficient to prove his guilt. The sentencing, scheduled for January 20, 2025, could result in life imprisonment or the death penalty.

The victim’s family expressed dissatisfaction with the investigation, suspecting multiple individuals were involved. The case, initially handled by local authorities, was transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) due to concerns over evidence tampering.

Both the former principal of the medical college and a local police officer were arrested for allegedly destroying evidence and delaying the filing of the First Information Report (FIR).

This conviction has intensified discussions about women’s safety and the need for systemic reforms to protect medical professionals in India.
