About Peter Yarrow

Born on May 31, 1938, in New York City, Yarrow became a pivotal figure in the 1960s folk music revival. Alongside bandmates Mary Travers and Noel “Paul” Stookey, Peter, Paul and Mary achieved significant success with hits like “Puff, the Magic Dragon,” co-written by Yarrow, and their rendition of Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’ in the Wind.”

The trio’s music often intertwined with their activism, notably performing at the 1963 March on Washington.

Throughout his career, Yarrow was also known for his political activism, opposing the Vietnam War and supporting various social causes. However, his personal life faced scrutiny due to a 1970 conviction related to a 14-year-old girl, for which he served a three-month prison sentence and later received a presidential pardon in 1981.

Peter Yarrow is survived by his two children, Bethany and Christopher, from his marriage to Mary Beth McCarthy. His family has set up a tribute website to honor him, where fans can share memories.
