Born Alfred Jesse Smith on July 26, 1941, in Shreveport, Louisiana, he later moved to San Pedro, California, where he grew up. Influenced by legends like Jesse Belvin and Sam Cooke, he developed his skills as a pianist and songwriter.
Under the stage name Brenton Wood, he achieved fame in the late 1960s, with “The Oogum Boogum Song” reaching No. 34 on the Billboard Hot 100 and “Gimme Little Sign” climbing to No. 9.
Wood’s music has been widely recognized in popular culture, appearing in films and shows such as Almost Famous and Don’t Worry Darling. His work has continued to inspire listeners for decades.
In recent years, he embarked on a farewell series titled “Catch You on the Rebound: The Last Tour,” though health challenges led to its postponement. Wood passed away peacefully at his home in Moreno Valley, California.
